Reference books are those that can provide background information on a topic to help you with your research.
They cannot be borrowed, and must be consulted in the Archives. They are located on the shelves in our reading room.

Vital Records in Ontario Before 1869: A Guide to Early Ontario Vital Records by Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in Ontario in 1869. Prior to 1869 vital records in early Ontario/Canada West/Upper Canada requires research of non-centralized record groups which this book identifies.
The value of this research guide is that it helps you to discover which records were kept, for which time frames they were kept, and how those records can be accessed. Of particular value is a listing of resources that are available on microfilm including the microfilm numbers for the resources, and identification of which records have been transcribed into book or database form.
Canadian Records of Birth, Marriage and Death: A Guide by Government registration of births, marriages, and deaths in Canada is a provincial responsibility, and thus the system and records differ by province. This book provides a general overview for each province and territory and identifies locations of records as well as links for online resources.
